Breastmilk Storage Basics

Whether you are building a freezer stash, heading back to work, or just giving yourself the flexibility to rest while someone else feeds the baby, knowing how to properly store breastmilk can help protect both your peace of mind and your baby’s health.

As a postpartum doula, I’m often asked about breastmilk storage; how long it lasts, how to thaw it, and how to keep things simple and safe. Here is a gentle guide to help you feel confident as you navigate this part of your feeding journey.

According to the cdc, here are the recommended storage times. https://www.cdc.gov/breastfeeding/pdf/HumanMilk-en-4x6-508.pdf

Freshly Expressed Milk

  • Room temperature: Safe for up to 4 hours

  • Cooler with an ice pack: Safe for up to 24 hours

  • Refrigerator: Best used within 4 days

  • Freezer: Use within 6 months for best quality, though it is acceptable up to 12 months

  • Leftover post-feeding: Use within 2 hours, then discard

Storage Tips

  • Use clean containers: breast milk storage bags, glass jars with lids, or bpa-free plastic containers.

  • Label with the date and time of day milk was pumped before storing.

  • Store in small portions (2-4oz) to avoid waste.

  • Leave some space at the top of containers, milk expands when frozen.

  • Store milk in the back of the fridge or freezer (where temperatures are more consistent).

Thawing and Reheating

  • Thaw in the fridge overnight or gently under warm running water.

  • Once thawed, use within 24 hours and do not refreeze.

  • Warm milk by placing the container in a bowl of warm water or a bottle warmer. Avoid microwaving as it can create hotspots and destroy nutrients.

  • Swirl gently to mix separated fat.

Feeding your baby, whether from the breast, a bottle, or a combination of both, is an act of deep love, care, and connection. There is no single right way to nourish your little one. Only what feels best for you and your family. Breastmilk storage doesn’t have to be stressful. With a few simple guidelines and a little support, you can confidently build a stash that works for your unique rhythm and needs. Every drop of milk you express is a gift, and you are doing an incredible job.
